Know What to Expect at Your First Orthodontic Visit

We know you have many choices when it comes to choosing orthodontic care for your family, and we are honored you have chosen us! At Knight Orthodontics, we have a patient-focused philosophy. In addition to providing optimal clinical care, we also strive to maintain a fun, friendly, and informative environment to ensure your comfort every step of the way. By utilizing the most up-to-date technology, Dr. Knight offers the safest and most efficient care available. Because no two patients are the same, we believe in providing customized care to each individual. Below, we will outline five things you can expect throughout your treatment process from beginning to end, so you can begin the journey to your new smile!

Step One: Your Initial Evaluation

At your first visit, Dr. Knight will perform a full oral examination to assess the health of your teeth, gums, and bone. Your medical history will be reviewed so that we can provide optimal treatment for your needs. X-rays and scans will be taken to determine the locations of your oral and maxillofacial structures, and to diagnose any problems.

Our financial experts will gather your insurance information so they can prepare a cost estimate for any necessary treatment. Please be sure to bring your insurance card to your appointment. Once your custom plan has been established, our team will discuss all financial options to determine what is right for you. Knight Orthodontics accepts most major credit cards and insurance plans, and also offers a flexible, in-office financing option.

Step Two: Records and Diagnosis

In order to properly diagnose orthodontic issues, a variety of records must be obtained. It is important that you share any symptoms, concerns, or discomfort with Dr. Knight so he can gather necessary information and create a comprehensive treatment plan for you.

We have a wide array of diagnostic tools at Knight Orthodontics. Your individual case will determine which technologies are used to diagnose your condition. Dr. Knight will examine your jaws, joints, and facial structures in addition to your teeth. Since many patients can suffer from unseen skeletal problems, 3-D cone beam scans may be used to properly diagnose these issues. Modern dental technology like the i-CAT allows us to obtain accurate radiographic images with approximately 90 percent less radiation than traditional x-rays.

Step Three: Computerized Analysis Consultation

Once treatment options have been established, you will see Dr. Knight for an appointment to discuss your case. Recent advances in technology allow us to perform an in-depth virtual analysis of your treatment case. Because of programs like Dolphin® 3-D Imaging and Anatomage® rendering software, we can manipulate x-ray images to show you what you will look like after your treatment is complete. All aspects of treatment will be discussed, including a start date and financial arrangements.

Step Four: Placement of Your New Braces

Once your treatment plan has been confirmed, you will schedule an appointment to have your braces placed. Advancements in the field of orthodontics allow us to perform this process quickly and comfortably.

Step Five: Follow-Up Visits

Perhaps the most important aspect of orthodontic care is compliance. This requires periodic check-ups to ensure everything is going smoothly. Typically, we will see you every four to eight weeks to evaluate your progress and perform any necessary adjustments. Because every patient has different needs, treatment timelines can vary. However, on average, orthodontic treatment takes approximately one to two years to complete. During this time, it is imperative that you maintain proper hygiene, and continue to visit your family dentist regularly.
